For many families, the emotional and psychological support anxious children receive is invaluable. But sometimes parents are left wondering whether there might be another piece of the puzzle that hasn't yet been explored.
That's where nutrition can play a role.
Our children's brains and nervous systems rely on a steady supply of nutrients to function at their best. The right nutrition can support energy, sleep, emotional regulation and, importantly, a child's capacity to cope with everyday demands.
As a Registered Nutritional Therapist and mum to an AuDHD daughter, I see every day how the right nutritional support can increase a child's capacity to cope with the everyday things they want to do.
The brain needs to be nourished
Many parents are surprised to learn that the brain uses around 20% of the body's energy, despite making up only a small proportion of our body weight. Just like a growing child needs enough fuel to run around and play, their brain also needs the right building blocks to regulate emotions, learn, concentrate and cope with everyday life.
This isn't about having the "perfect" diet or getting every meal right. It's about recognising that food does more than fill hungry tummies. It provides the raw materials the brain and nervous system need to function well. Sometimes, just a few simple changes can help a child feel calmer, more settled and better able to cope with the world around them.
The Feeding Calm Podcast
That's why I created The Feeding Calm Secret Podcast: Summer Series for a Calmer Return to School.
It's a free series of short episodes designed for parents of anxious and neurodivergent children who want gentle, practical ideas to support their child's wellbeing over the summer, ready for a calmer September.
Throughout the series, I share simple, realistic nutrition strategies, explain the science in an easy-to-understand way, and chat with guest experts who support families from different perspectives. Together, we explore the many pieces of the puzzle, from behaviour and emotional wellbeing to sensory needs, parenting, and nutrition.
Here's a taste of what's inside:
🎧 Episode 1 – Why summer is actually the perfect time to support an anxious child's nervous system. Discover why the summer holidays are about much more than a break from school, and how a few gentle changes now can help your child build the capacity they need for a calmer return in September.
🎧 Episode 2 – The surprising connection between when your child eats and how they feel, behave and cope. Could long gaps between meals or missed breakfasts be making everyday life feel harder? Learn why steady energy matters for the brain and nervous system, and how simple food routines can support emotional regulation.
🎧 Episode 3 – Three nutrients affecting your child's mood and focus and the everyday foods where you'll find them. Learn about three nutrients that play an important role in helping the brain function well, supporting mood, focus and emotional wellbeing. No complicated meal plans, just practical ideas using everyday foods.
You'll also hear inspiring conversations with guest experts covering topics such as understanding behaviour, reducing overwhelm, supporting sensory differences, and helping children thrive in a way that feels compassionate and achievable for the whole family.
If you're supporting an anxious child and would like to explore how nutrition might complement the strategies you're already using, I'd love you to join us.
Because when we support both the mind and the body, we give our children the best opportunity to thrive.
